From the Artist: Myong-Jeol collectively represents the Korean holidays, days like Harvest day and New year’s celebration. I dedicate this art piece to how I remember our Je-sa-sang (the table for our ancestors) during Myong-Jeol. Each food item on the table is arranged in a specific way and, depending on your town, that specialty food is placed on the table. We then bow and let the spirit of our ancestors come and visit our “best” meal offering. The screen facing the table represents Ee-seung (the world of the living) while the area behind the screen would represent Jeo-seung (the world of the dead). A wooden plaque at the head of the table places a dedication to the ancestors in hopes that they pay a visit and eat the meal. It is a symbol of reunification while celebrating these special occasions.
