Daniel Toledo
SEMILLAS – a solo exhibition by Daniel Toledo, like its name is rooted in patience, planning, and growth. Semillas, the Spanish word for “seeds”, are the ideas and concepts Daniel has been carrying around for years, waiting for the right time to sow them. As his career continued, Daniel furthered his skills and artistry, waiting for the right time… the right conditions… and the right season where his Semillas could not only grow, but thrive just the way he had always envisioned.
Using the four earth tones that make up Zorn’s Palette – Yellow Ochre, Ivory Black, Cadmium Red, and Titanium White – to which Daniel refers to as his “Urban Decay” palette, Daniel combines the human figure with organic elements in his work. It’s the intertwining of these bodies and organics that creates a surreal and dream-like experience for the viewer. Daniel uses these earth tones that make up his Urban Decay palette to focus on reconnecting with nature – giving focus to the details that we often ignore. Inspired by his time spent in nature, with people, and travelling, Daniel is able to bring you to the memories and emotions expressed through the use of his Urban Decay palette.
Daniel Toledo is a Los Angeles based artist that is known for his blending of realism and fantasy. With his use of oils, he creates these whimsically surreal settings that are inspired by his life experiences, but moments in time that we can all relate to and remember our own versions. It’s the details of the missed memories or fleeting moments and feelings that is so familiar and evokes emotion. Beyond the use of oils, it is the feelings captured in these moments that gives Daniel’s work their depth.
